70 Years of Service: Where We Came From… and Where We Are Now

Still moving Barbados forward.

For seventy years, the Transport Board has been more than a bus company — it has been a vital part of the social and economic heartbeat of Barbados.

Established in 1955, the Transport Board was created to provide safe, reliable, and affordable public transportation for all Barbadians. In its early years, the organisation operated with a modest fleet, limited infrastructure, and a small but determined workforce. Yet from the very beginning, the mission was clear: to connect communities, support national development, and ensure that mobility was accessible to everyone — regardless of location or circumstance.

Through the decades, the Transport Board grew alongside the nation. As Barbados expanded its road network, educational institutions, housing developments, and tourism sector, the Board adapted to meet rising demand. New depots were constructed, routes expanded, and generations of drivers, mechanics, clerical staff, supervisors, and support personnel committed themselves to public service.

The journey has not been without challenges. Economic shifts, evolving commuter expectations, an aging fleet, and infrastructure demands have tested the organisation time and again. Yet resilience has always defined the Transport Board. Each challenge was met with innovation, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to service.

Today, the Transport Board stands at a pivotal moment in its history.

We are no longer defined solely by where we began, but by how boldly we are shaping the future. Our operations now reflect a modern public transportation system — one that embraces electrification, digital transformation, improved infrastructure, enhanced safety standards, and customer-focused service delivery. Significant investments are being made in depots, workshops, fleet-support systems, and charging infrastructure to ensure sustainability and operational readiness for the years ahead.

At the same time, we honour the people who made this journey possible. Our retirees laid the foundation. Our long-serving employees carried the torch through decades of change. And our current workforce continues to rise to the challenge — delivering service daily with professionalism, pride, and care.

As Barbados prepares for the next chapter in public transportation, including new governance structures and a renewed national vision for mass transit, the legacy of the Transport Board remains firmly embedded in the system we are building. The past 70 years have shaped who we are — and they have prepared us for what lies ahead.

This anniversary celebration is therefore not just about looking back. It is about recognising progress, celebrating people, and confidently embracing the future.
