World Public Transport Day 2026

As the Chief Operations Officer of the Barbados Transport Board, this is more than a global observance for me. Every day, for as long as I can remember, I have seen firsthand the role public transport plays in keeping our country moving. It connects people to opportunity, supports livelihoods, and strengthens communities in ways that often go unnoticed.

As I child, student, and young adult, I benefited from having access to public transportation. It allowed me to socialize, to study, and ultimately, to develop a level of independence

Based on that background, today is also deeply personal.

But it is not only about me and others like me, but it is also about recognising the people behind that impact.

Now that I work in public transport, I also need us to remember the drivers, maintenance teams, the route and schedule planners, and the support staff. To all of them we have to say thank you. Your commitment, often under challenging circumstances, is what keeps the Barbados Transport Board’s system running.

Here in Barbados, we are actively working to build a more modern, inclusive, and sustainable transport system. From improving operations to advancing our transition to cleaner energy, to being more community engaged and customer focused, we are dedicated to delivering a service that meets the needs of today while preparing for the future.

We know there is more to be done, and we remain committed to that journey.

For us, World Public Transport Day is not just about celebration, because we have been here for seventy years, but more importantly, it is about recommitment to our communities both internal and external.

Because when public transport works well, all of us move forward.
